Hertfordshire Boys Retain Cheshunt Salver

Hertfordshire Boys retained the Cheshunt Salver when they defeated Essex Boys at West Essex Golf Club on Tuesday 27th May. This annual fixture sees six under 18’s boys and six under 16’s boys represent their county, playing foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon.

The day started early with a 7.30am meet at the venue and what followed was an extremely tight and competitive match. The morning foursomes were shared with 2 wins to each side and 2 halved matches.

Heavy, but much needed rain descended on us at lunchtime, with all the weather Apps in agreement that it would last all afternoon, which indeed it did. It was grim, but the singles went ahead and there was some mighty fine golf played considering the conditions.

Fortunes fluctuated and for a long time it looked like the scores would be tied, in which case the trophy would be shared. However, this is when the never-say-die fighting qualities of Lewis Salthouse became evident, as he won the last hole to secure a vital half for Hertfordshire, who were victorious by 9 ½ points to 8 ½ .  An excellent result in awful conditions.
