Green secures Seniors Championship at first attempt

The Great Yarmouth and Caister golfer teed off in the first group out, alongside Norfolk Seniors team-mates Iain Reid and Dean Futter.

Green recorded three birdies in a one-over-par round of 71 to claim the title from Simon Tilbrook of Royal Norwich and Eaton member James Macleod.

Green, 55, said: “This was my first time playing in the Seniors and I'm very happy. I've won the Boys Championship, the Norfolk Open and the County Matchplay in the past so it's really nice to add this one.

"I played solid all through the round but especially on the three par-5's, all of which I reached the green in two and made birdies. This is a fantastic event, with a very large field, so I'm happy to win."

Norfolk County Golf Union's joint team manager Green now qualifies for England Golf's County Seniors Champion of Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa Golf Club on September 13.

Wensum Valley golfer Bernie Vaughan won the County Seniors handicap title with an excellent round of nett 67, including birdies at the 5th and 12th holes. It was a close call for Vaughan who triumphed on countback from Tim Cunningham of The Links.

Vaughan dominated in the Super Seniors categories, for players aged 70 and over. His gross score of 77 saw him land both the Scratch and Handicap titles.

Reid and Futter, along with Stephen Long, won the team competition for the host club. Bawburgh trio Paolo Payne, Ian Rafferty and Adrian Sabberton came out on top in the handicap team event.

A hundred players took part in one of Norfolk County Golf Union’s biggest championships and the course at Eaton was in excellent condition, considering the hot summer.

NCGU president Stuart Goodman and vice-president Chris Lamb attended as starters and Norman Blanch and Mike Devlin provided essential administration and scoring duties during a long day.
